Is It Too Early or Too Late for Therapy? Myths About Timing

Some of the most common questions we hear as couples counselors are:
“Isn’t it too soon for therapy?”
“Is it too late to fix this?”
“Are we even bad enough to need help?”
Spoiler: none of those are reasons to rule out therapy.
Let’s bust a few myths:
Myth 1: “It’s Too Early For Couples Therapy”
You’ve only been together for a year. Things are good, but you’ve had a few hiccups. You’re starting to notice some things about your partner that you didn’t realize were so irritating to you (seriously, who loads the dishwasher like that?).
THIS IS AN AMAZING TIME TO START COUPLES COUNSELING!!
It might feel dramatic - but it’s actually smart. Learning how to manage your relationship problems now will help prevent them from turning into the kind of problems that end relationships.
Learning how to communicate, repair after conflict, and show up with empathy isn’t dramatic- it’s relationship insurance. No matter how long you’ve been together, investing early makes everything smoother later.
Myth 2: “It’s Too Late”
You’ve been stuck in the same fight for years.
You swear you’ve tried everything.
You’re hurt, disconnected, and not sure if there is any hope that it will work.
Seriously, you’ve tried it all.
We get it. But if you haven’t tried couples counseling, then you haven’t tried everything.
If there’s even a flicker of willingness between you both, couples therapy can help.
No matter how long things have felt off, change is still possible. A good therapist helps you sort through the noise, rebuild trust, and start creating new experiences together.
Myth 3: “We Should Be Able to Figure This Out Ourselves”
Let’s be honest, most of us weren’t taught how to “do” relationships. We picked up patterns from our families, the internet, and pop culture. That’s not exactly a roadmap for healthy communication.
Going to therapy isn’t admitting failure. It’s admitting that you don’t know how to figure it out, but you’re willing to learn.
And that’s badass to admit.
Myth 4: “We’re Not in Crisis, So We Don’t Need It”
Couples therapy doesn’t need to be the emergency room. If you care about taking care of your relationship, it’s your regular checkup.
You don’t need to wait until things are on fire. I mean, you can - but it’s harder to come back from crisis than it is to come back from minor malfunctions.
If your relationship matters to you, it’s always the right time to tend to it.
When Is the Right Time?
Simple answer: when you’re ready to commit to a better relationship.
Well, are you?
